Production flowchart
The basic production line of KGHM Polska Copper S.A. is a fully-integrated technological process, in which the final product of one stage of production forms the raw material for the next stage. The copper ore extracted from the mines is transported to processing plants, where it is then enriched. Copper concentrate is obtained as a result, which is then sent to the smelters. In the smelters concentrate is smelted and fire refined into anode copper, which is then electrolytically refined into copper cathodes. From these cathodes both wire rod and round billets are produced. Meanwhile, the anode slime which arises from the electrorefining process is a raw material used in the production of precious metals.
The lead-bearing dust which arises during the smelting process is processed into lead. Processing of the used electrolite also produces nickel sulphate and copper sulphate. In addition, gases from the smelter furnaces are used in the production of sulphuric acid. Also economically utilised are smelter slags, which are sold as road-building material.
